The ongoing and recurring cost is the key here.  A USB drive has almost zero cost in that regard, while maintaining a PC running Plex can become a second job.

I've been running Plex Server since 2016 and other than adding media it takes very little maintenance.  You do know that it will run on a variety of NAS devices don't you?

Plex servers and the likes were fine 10+ years ago.  Nowadays, instead of having another PC run Plex (and incurring additional cost like power consumption, maintenance, etc.), it is cheaper and more convenient to just plug your portable USB hard drive or thumb drive into your smart TV or streaming device

If all we're talking about is cost and convenience then there would be no USB hard drive, or thumb drive, or TV, or movies.

I would call that a tagline, which the rules say to not contribute. When in doubt, it's always ok to just not contribute something, even if you decide to keep it locally. There's no shame in that.

Is there a rule that states the overview must be about the film?

It's very easy to find the rule pertaining to overviews of films. One might assume that the overview would be identified by it's being about the film.
Quote:
Copy the overview from the back of the DVD case exactly as written, including capitalization of words exactly as shown on the back of the case. Separate all paragraphs with a blank line.

If there is no overview on the back cover one may supply a simple, short overview.

Regarding media companies, the rules say, "Enter in the following order:

  • Publisher (Content)
  • Licensor (Home Video Rights)
  • Distributor

  • If "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios" is the publisher then list them.

The rules then go on to say, "Some companies (using similar but different names) may serve more than one function. List such companies only once".  This tells me that the "Licensed from Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios" shouldn't be listed because that company is already listed as publisher.

They're probably in a custom collection that's not included in the "owned" collection.

I believe they do film preservation, but I don't think they're a licensor or publisher. You can read a bit about their work here.

If that is meant to be some sort of retort, your point escapes me. You could quote the entire forum as reminders. The only thing that embodies our legal entitlement is the license agreement.

It was meant as an addendum to this thread.

As a reminder, this is the license agreement we agree to when installing DVD Profiler on the PC:

As a reminder, here is the last message I remember seeing from Ken, on February 25, 2024

One additional note: We're aware of the Android app absence, and will be working to resolve soon.

I have a number of WB DVDs that will no longer play completely, but fortunately I was able to get most of them onto my Plex server before this happened. For some of the others, superior Blu-ray editions have been released and I've upgraded (as I probably would have anyway.)  There are a few that I've had to record off of TCM until such time as a new disc is available.

Amazon are closing their Appstore. Any alterneratives?

Simple, convince Ken to upgrade the app and get it back on the Google Play Store.

It's become a moot point with me since I upgraded my Galaxy S22 Ultra to a new Galaxy S25 Ultra and it won't run 32 bit apps. So no DVD Profiler on my phone any more, unless Invelos breaks down and upgrades.

The "no" voters should have left explanations for their votes in the comments. It's likely that some of these discs had been previously released with different covers, and you may need to use alternate versions for your contributions.

Check out this section of the rules.

For Ken’s disappearance to be effective...

Ken was on the forum this past Sunday, doing whatever it is he does around here these days.  Before that, it was about four months since he'd dropped by.

I'd vote no and list the unflagged uncredited cast as the justification.

Well, someone is logging in with Ken's account, but is it actually Ken? I wonder.

The way that February post was written, I'm convinced it was Ken, however I'm at a loss to explain why what seem like easy fixes aren't being taken care of.

It would require the lifting of a finger, which is apparently more effort than this forum is worth to the moderator.

I do not know why they do not, with all the generosity and patience that Invelos has shown us over the years, simply open up the software,  database and website to the world.

Is is possible that somehow the source code has been lost or compromised?

Entering it seems harmless, whether it's useful or not, and it doesn't seem to be explicitly disallowed.  Removing it from one's local database and locking the field is trivial.
