Today I tried to modify the reference voltage (VREF) of my a4988 from OYOSTEPPER. but the potentiometer was adjusted too high so I don't know how to re-set it to 1.2V.

Just turn the pot all the way counterclockwise first (gentle touch—those pots are fragile), then slowly adjust clockwise while measuring VREF with a multimeter until you hit 1.2V.

I think the same as you! Trying this way may also have a 50% success rate but I think it's worth trying until a better solution is found.

Interesting challenge! While direct manipulation can be tempting, have you considered consulting the datasheet or OYOSTEPPER's documentation for recommended VREF setting procedures?
